ANDROPAUSE
What is Andropause?
When men reach their 40s and even 55s, they may experience a phenomenon similar to female menopause, called andropause.
Unlike women, men do not have clear signs, such as the cessation of menses, to mark this transition. Both, however, are characterized by a drop in hormone levels. Estrogen in women and testosterone in men. Changes in the body occur very gradually in men and are accompanied by changes in attitude and mood, fatigue, loss of energy, sexual drive and physical agility.
What's more, studies show that this drop in testosterone puts you at risk for other health problems, such as heart disease or brittle bones.
Men's "transition" can be much more gradual and extend over decades, usually after the age of 50, although some begin 10 years earlier. Attitude, psychological stress, alcohol, injuries or surgeries, medications, obesity, and infections can all contribute to its onset.
Causes of andropause
At around 30 years of age, testosterone levels begin to drop by about 10% per decade.
Simultaneously, another factor in the body, Sex Hormone Binding Globulin, or SHBG, increases. SHBG traps much of the still circulating testosterone and prevents it from having its effect on the body's tissues.
Andropause is associated with low bioavailable levels of testosterone.
